Escaping from Terrible Future
Performative Exhibition
Approach
Speculative design project addresses politics of fear. The designed artifacts consists of a lie detector, functioning as a passport device. The concept inspirited from Sara Ahmed phenomenology theory.

Focus: Speculative Design / Norm creativity / Inclusive Design / Performative Design / Norm criticism
Main roles in the project: Shared responsibility in every stage
The design in this exhibition discusses the relations between humans and non-human elements. At a macro, it questions affordance between power relations and artifacts, through the speculative design projects it exemplifies and addresses this phenomenon. We wanted the visitor of the exhibition to hand themselves into a story. We wanted to impose the feeling of being an outcast and the fear that encompasses, positioning the visitor in a dystopian world.
One of the many iterations
Aside from academic studies and co design explorations, we learned to prototype with carbon fiber :)
Creating safe raft for our exhibition was challenging. Some people rightfully criticized being exclusive but that was the point core concept of the exhibition was creating experince so NORMAL by social standart can experince what is it like to be OTHERS ..,
Year 2050,you are escaping from police to reach the promised land you find yourself near to lake with tools of future. You must create DIY solution to cross the border and reach safety other side of the lake.
Method and Theoretical Discussion
The perception of norms are related to social circumstance such as a person’s education level, social values, cultural heritage and ethnic background. The psychophysical and emotional impact of those norms appear everywhere in our environments, since norms are arguably designed by institutions, these designs furthermore shape who we are and how we perceive norms. The method used in the exhibition wishes to raise the awareness of this, but the awareness is also dependent on the visitors background. To increase the visitors experience in the exhibition, the formulation of these two speculative projects uses the described theories and its effects to create an impact. As a result, the exhibition wishes to create bodily effects both inwards and outwards to generate emotional affection emerging from their specific contexts. The scenario of having to escaping it, are signs/emotions/events that potentially would stick.
Make use of a exhibition as a tool for amplifying speculative design projects where we combine theory and design practice skills in a contemporary format.
Creating holistic experiment positioning the visitor embodied in the characters of two design fiction stories.
Curate queer theory, norm criticality and norm creativity through performative and interactive exhibition.
Reflecting upon personal lived experience questioning the recent agonistic development.
Practice iterative design methodology based on theory, as well as iterative physical practice of craftsmanship.
Putting the fear of failure aside in order to challenge ourselves and develop our skill sets.
The contextualized act such as going on a unstable (poorly designed) raft, is something some people simply won’t do, which is perfectly fine, its rather designed to make a statement. Just as some people might love the world the way it is or simply are afraid of the unknown, the changes that are addressed are very much uncomfortable and complex and the actual choice is merely luxury, not given to everyone. However, in order to reach a sustainable world the exhibition argues that the matter of choice is somewhat un-relevant. We all have to act differently in order to create change.
