Carehood

Helping Laerdal to Help People

Carehood

Approach

Our approach is start from analyzing whole system and by detection of point with various stakeholder conducting task analysis and expert interviews. From the very beginning we desired to help people who are living in rural areas of Sweden. Solve their access problem to help by creating a community to help each other. As most of the projects we conduct at UID we started by listening real human stories (UCD/HCD). We were intrigued by listening stories about fellow students and their parents whom living in the north part of the Sweden. Our main inspiration as one of our team members their experience about living in the north. We started project designing and understanding: What it is community and what is neighborhood? How these social units tie together? How people rely on each other? We ask ourselves how we can connect people to help each other.

Fall 2020, 5 weeks

Partners: Umeå Institute of Design. Laerdal

Team: Anna, Emil, Sandra, Mehmet

Personal Focus: Co-creation, Participatory Design, Co-design, Design Ethnography, UX Research

Main roles in the project: UX Researcher, Facilitator, UX

In this research-oriented project, interdisciplinary approach and experimental participatory design methodology was essential to our team. We aimed to design system which we introducing new service community and implementing emergency communication system, metaphors of blanket visible though our project be blanket for one and other. Support the bystanders/patient by people they know. We quickly realized safety net factors in emergency situations getting help from people you know instead of foreigners creates immersive difference. With our system design we aimed to create seamless translation between various actors of event. Streamline conversation between bystanders and dispatcher and reduce cognitive stress of each individual.

We had this team vocabulary called “warm blanket” we wanted to create chance for patient get help like getting covered from warm blanket. We developed system where community itself makes people feel safe and sound. We aimed to humanize emergency system and argument human touch in emergency help systems.

Brief

“How we can provide necessary help for the people living in rural areas of Sweden?”

“How we can connect people who is living in same community in case emergency?”

CPR training, role play case studies and expert interviews was

essential to definine the task analysis of current system.

Looking into our progress

Co-creation workshop

Preparation

The preparation can divide in to two categories. Planning of the workshop, creation of physical place to enhance creativity and ensure joyful environment+ atmosphere for acting out various stories-roles. For workshop we decided to manifest three area which are living room, neighbor house, dispatch room)

Research Questions

Next step was making decision about our research questions. We splendid a day on making decision on these questions because as a team we felt that, we would gain more profit out of workshop if we already narrow down context we wanted to concentrate on later on. Our parameter influenced by the desktop research we conducted.

Outcome of that research were, it is challenging for the people to survive in rural area without involvement of 3rd parties and success stories of dispatchers usually pointed that out, they managed to help the patient-bystanders when they were able to think outside of the box.

Finally, we influenced by human stories and experience. We conducted internal interview to learn more lifestyle in north by talking to Sandra additionally we interviewed myself to catch detail about performing CPR in real life and its ramification on person before and after the event. ( I saved someone live during my military service )

How we can help the people living in rural areas performing CPR?

How we can provide people with necessary help in case of emergency?

How we can connect people living in isolation in case emergency?

.

Stories

We develop three set of stories to try out co-creation workshop furthermore we planned obstacles to throw away on the participants. While creating these stories we put emphasis aspect of inclusive design.

Scenario 1

You live in far in the north your grandparent is collapse, there is chance he is suffering from cardiac arrest. How would you reach out for help?

Scenario 2

You and your partner having nostalgia movie night, while watching one of the your favorite movie from your youth. (Home alone) you hear noise from bathroom. Suddenly you jump up run towards noise, how you reach out for help when you fall into despair or what kind support mechanism would prevent you defeating despair.

My main responsibility was managing amazing machine workshop, motivate people to participate whenever they feel shy away. Help them to help us, make them believe they are creative and their insights, stories, experience whatever they are sharing are valuable for us. Make them believe what we are doing important. To be able to these things I relayed on my instinct and gut feeling and have act upon them to improve conversation. Moreover, I sketch out some physical props to use as a pointer during our refection.

When our participants got lost in subcategories. Such as, map of Sweden in rural area, brief information about cardiac arrest and Laerdal lifesaving cycle. Furthermore, I guided participants how to think their hand, put on emphasis on they are not designing final product nor we are converging on developing product-oriented solution solution. Props are tool for conversation. I challenged themselves and open up conversation by using tools such as 5-Why and yes-and tools.

Creation or choosing and implementing of warm up tools

Active passive: As name of it indicates, it is a passive tool. Part of my responsibility was detecting passive participants motivate them to join discussion and adjust power dynamic between different individuals. To be able to perform this I used my interview skills form design ethnography practice follow the conversation, catch the oral props and responds in convenient manner to increase their engagement to the workshop.

Persona creation: We wanted to generate quick card game for creation of persons as our participants acted out someone else. The result was varied as some people choose to create persona almost identical to themselves (I consider this as indicator maybe this person fell least conformable or don’t trust his/her creative superpower. As design assistant I paid extra attention to motivate his/her participation in next stages of the workshop). We aimed to use all of our warm up exercises as an ice breaker, tool sets to enhance group dynamic of team (I always associated this team dynamics closely related to the team sport I played in my youth. When I reflect into pass our coaches organised similar activities to reinforce friendship and collaborative dynamic of the team). Furthermore, after our internal rehearsal we quickly realized there chance to forge more successful body storming seasons if personas of the participants goes beyond datasheets.

Dance off and Laser beam: These two methods are physical warm up as their name demonstrate, in first exercise we ask one participant to do crazy and foolish dance move then other participants imitated the moves. We practiced this exercise as a one set, around 30 second repetition in circulation layout this was helpful as because it lead into quick discussion about pop culture which result in enjoyment of team dynamics….Secondly, laser beam is about doing laser sound and miming them, this exercise make it clear who were hooligans of Star wars or Star trek.

I believe body storming is wonderful investigation tool to sketch our various interest areas base on people experience. It is also great method to wield people together combine their presence to stitch our theatrical storytelling. Most of the cases design is about communicating, storytelling and experience itself thus design progress and body storming integrated which other in multiple notion. It provided opportunity, behavioral and embodiment sensational thinking. Body storming, leads into developing understatement between designer+ facilitator and participant + end user. Opening up the empathy channel between various participants. Body-storming can allow designer to recognize norms more fluently. All these factor add onto each other open door for us to be more collaborative/co-creative with application of inclusive design methodology and norm critically we can create more inclusive world even creates project will reduce discrimination we face in our society.

One of the examples from amazing machine part

Amazing machines

Credit to Emil, he introduced us with this wonderful method :) We asked the workshop participants to come up with AMAZING MACHINES solution that can fix anything, anywhere…We wanted to conduct more iteration of body storming seasons with these machines as second stage of body storming that could help them saved their loved one in emergency situations. Some of the stunning example from the workshop are: Car with a built-in alarm to notify the surroundings or smart blanket to nurture and protect the person you love. Even it is not logical to cover patient with more clothes (Makes it harder to apply compression and usage of AED)

We seek out meaning behind props rather reflecting on them as if they are the result of solid methodologies like double diamond/UCD.

Conclusion was simply that maybe it's not items that we need, but we need solutions that are changing or creating support systems, reducing arrival time of help or connect the people who wants to help each other. Systems and communities that make people feel safe and secure. Amazing machine was one of the most intriguing part of co creation seasons. It allowed us prototype wonderful props and reflect on them during desktop walk through. How we organized this section was quite structured also it was allowed creativity

We bring Lego sets ( if someone would prefer to service overview or create service map…. ) We brought physical everyday object. We choose to create collection which was combination of authentic artifacts which will lead into design of surreal artifacts to enhance conversation. Prepared set of adjectives to define quality of artifacts such as colorful, edgy fast, slow etc…  The core of creation was fitting together adjectives and artifacts together. After creation of artifacts we had pitching seasons where participants explained their ideas after listing each of the individuals and allowing them to explain their idea without stealing from each other time. We use YES/ AND method +5 Whys to understand reason behind creation of artifacts.

In this project one of the most educative element of it was the designing our own progress and organization and facilitation of co-creation workshop. While using body storming and amazing machine combination as a main tool-sets in our arsenal. We wanted our participant of the co creation seasons to hand themselves into our story which they act defined scenario base on their life experience and personality. We vision to impose the feeling of being cast out and far away from help, positioning the them self into isolated event and observe how might they react.

Insights from co-creations seasons : Body storming and Crazy machines

As a team we invested great deal of time reflect on our insight and built ideation wall to surround each other with knowledge we discover thought our workshop.

Experiment with AI: Would they will be able to help me in case of cardiac arrest.

Experience mapping from empirical research material

Creating warm team dynamics was always top priority to develop our vision for the project
